VOLUNTEERING
“The big smiles on the kids’ faces stemming from what we’re doing there is all I need to know that I’m involved in something very special.”
-
Anne McAllister, DREAMS volunteer
DREAMS offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Teaching Assistants
Our greatest need for volunteers is in the classroom. Even though our classes are kept small, many of our students benefit from having a one-on-one relationship. Just one hour of your time a week can make a huge difference in a child’s life.
Fundraising
As a non-profit organization, DREAMS is constantly seeking sponsorships,
donations, and community support. If you are interested in participating
in fundraising efforts or helping out with special events, we'd love to
hear from you.
Board of Directors
Members of the DREAMS Board of Directors help to fundraise, plan, and
shape policies for the organization. Currently, 18 members of the Wilmington
Community comprise the DREAMS Executive Board of Directors:
Maryann Adkins, Geannine Boyette, Michelle Cummings, Carrie Davis, Russell
Davis, Michael Glancy, Phyllis Gorham, Kevin Hicks, Jim Hively, Scott
Lowdermilk, Dana O'Donovan, Co-Chair, Marva Mapson Robinson, Sam Ryan,
Linda Stinson, Tara Tatum, Treasurer, Yasmin Thomkinson, Chairperson,
Judy Wall, Secretary, Tracy Wilkes, Executive Director
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Directors,
please contact Yasmin Tomkinson, Chairperson at yasminshah@yahoo.com
Administrative Assistance
We are always looking for organized, enthusiastic volunteers to help with
mailings, provide administrative support, and assist with special projects.
Volunteer Profile
Ellie was a recent graduate of New Hanover High School where she participated in the Lyceum Program for academically gifted students. Before heading off to college, Ellie volunteered twice a week as a teaching assistant at the DREAMS Center. “I’m really interested in art, especially graphic design and photography. Volunteering at DREAMS gives me a chance to share my interests with some really great children,” said Ellie. She has assisted children ages 8 to 13 in several different classes. Ellie even guided the students in our young art class through the process of making paper mache´ and contour drawings. “Each time I leave the DREAMS Center, I’m in a better mood,” said Ellie. “I can tell that what we do means a lot to the kids and to our community.”
