Here at DREAMS, we like to say that we’re ‘youth led, adult supported.’ The program has its roots in the Youth as Resource model, which regards young people as vital members of the community whose energy, intelligence and commitment position them as agents of positive change. Teen Council’s responsibilities include fundraising, program planning and staffing DREAMS events. They also learn about the inner workings of the nonprofit industry, and gain real-world job skills through paid student internships. And they have fun, participating in outdoor adventure retreats and hosting recruitment events like Bring A Friend to Class Week. The Teen Council is also a fantastic forum for students to make their opinions known and shape the face of the program. As one member says, “It gives us a voice, a choice and a time to bond. And it creates a sense of unity. One voice, one choice, one mind.”
